Building an Organized, Engaging Classroom
At East Kentwood High School, innovation in the classroom often starts with building the right foundation. Thanks to support from the Kentwood Public Schools Education Foundation, math teacher Mrs. Leugs received a grant to transform her classroom into a more organized, collaborative, and distraction-free learning space.
Transforming the Learning Environment
Essential Storage Solutions: New bookcases provide dedicated spaces to store classroom supplies and student binders, which were especially crucial for organizing materials for a brand-new AP Pre-Calculus course built entirely from scratch without an existing textbook.
Focused Engagement: New phone storage solutions help keep distractions at bay, allowing students to stay fully present during lessons.
Fueling Collaboration & Hands-On Learning
Interactive Tools: Laminated cardstock and dry-erase sheets empower students to dive into reusable, interactive group activities and create dynamic unit-summary posters.
Low-Pressure Participation: A generous supply of Post-it notes gives students a quick, low-stakes way to share their mathematical thinking and ideas.
Impact Beyond One Classroom
The benefits of this grant stretch far beyond a single room. Because Mrs. Leugs actively collaborates across the math department to share what organizational systems work best, resources like the bookcases, phone storage solutions, and everyday learning tools are helping uplift and organize multiple classrooms across the department.
