Every August, before the first bell of the new school year rings, Falcon Stadium comes alive with a rhythm that sets the tone for the months ahead.
Thanks to the generous donors of the Kentwood Public Schools Education Foundation (KPSEF), more than 250 East Kentwood student musicians, directors, staff, and dedicated parent volunteers gathered for a transformative week of summer band camp — bringing this season’s field show, Hot Pursuit, from sheet music into motion.
Beyond the Sheet Music: Discipline, Leadership, and Belonging
While band camp is a masterclass in musical timing and drill formations, its true impact reaches far beyond halftime routines. It is an intensive learning environment that challenges students physically, intellectually, and artistically.
“Band camp is much more than preparation for a performance. It is an extension of music education, where students develop musicianship, discipline, leadership, and a sense of belonging. The experience builds confidence and connections that carry into the school year.”
— Kim Meyers Baas, Fine Arts Coordinator, Kentwood Public Schools
Under the August sun, high school musicians master complex tempos and footwork, but they also learn how individual accountability contributes to a collective triumph. For many incoming students, camp is where high school truly begins — forging deep peer friendships and mentorships that anchor them well before the first day of class.
Fueling School Pride and Community Tradition
The ripple effect of camp resonates throughout the entire academic year. The dedication forged during that August week fuels:
Friday Night Lights: Powering school spirit and time-honored traditions at home football games.
The Kentwood Invitational: Welcoming over 20 visiting high school marching bands to our home stadium each October for an evening of premier regional pageantry.
Civic Pride: Uniting families, alumni, and neighbors through the universal language of live musical performance.
The East Kentwood Marching Band stands as an integral heartbeat of our school culture, illustrating how investment in arts education directly strengthens community cohesion.
Ensuring Access and Quality for Every Student
Access, quality, and community form the cornerstone of fine arts education in Kentwood. Because of community support through KPSEF mini-grants and program funding, financial hurdles are cleared so that every student can access world-class arts opportunities.
When you invest in the Foundation, you aren’t just funding sheet music or field time — you are equipping Kentwood students with confidence, discipline, and memories that last a lifetime.
